Garbage is inexhaustible it seems and a growing concern for municipalities. I grew up on Long Island and back in the forties they use to dump it in a big pile and light a match to it. The resultant stink was quite memorable. Growth of Nassau and Suffolk counties of course led to some deep thinking. There are old sand mines they started to dump in but they stunk too. Several towns tried several types of incinerators which was an improvement lost their licenses due to emissions. Finally they built 2 large plants that used technology developed to destroy chemical weapons to burn the trash and use the heat to make steam to run generators. They charge to unload the trash then turn around and sell the power.
It seems like common sense, but the medical research on sugar is the same. There is no redeeming quality to this harmful additive.Schools are banning pop machines and other high sugar sources. You can be sure, this is just the tip of the iceberg.
In many countries tax breaks or credits are available for those who install sustainable energy electricity generation equipment. In the USA, the government and IRS have issued tax breaks or credits for DIY home solar panels for years as an incentive to reduce bulk energy consumption and focus people on power supplier sources. No doubt these incentives will increase as the need to move away from carbon intensive forms of electricity generation increase.
Beware of “greenwashing.” Many fashion companies like to claim that their clothes are green, but they may be jumping on the green bandwagon while actually harming the earth. For example, many companies are touting bamboo this and bamboo that, since the public perception is that bamboo is green. But not all bamboo is created equal. True, the plant is renewable, but forests and animal habitats are being cleared to make way for some plantations.
The first hydro power plant in the United States was introduced in 1882. It was placed in Wisconsin. Most people do not realize that a great deal of the early electricity and power in the United States once came from such hydropower plants. In 1940 approximately half of the electricity used came from this source. Later it was replaced by the use of coal.
