There has been much written about the environmental impact of carbon extraction of oil. While it’s true that there are some serious disadvantages associated with carbon drilling the majority of these are due to the fact that not all the carbon ultimately created will be burned up as fuel. The solution, however, is one that Canada’s oil and gas sector is currently working towards: low carbon crude gas and oil.
How does carbon gas and carbon oil compare to carbon dioxide emissions First of all, carbon dioxide is an organic pollutant. It’s what’s responsible for pollution in the first place, and while it’s a very damaging pollutant when it’s stored in oil reserves, it’s still perfectly acceptable. What’s not acceptable, though it is that it takes millions of years for carbon dioxide to break down in the atmosphere and be taken out into the atmosphere , where it can interact with wildlife and natural systems before being absorbed into the ground and water and increasing atmospheric pressure.

This means that any increase in atmospheric pressure will result in a greater amount of carbon dioxide to be absorbed by the soil, and oil wells will need to operate at higher pressures in order to extract more crude oil. Because carbon dioxide is an absorbent and adsorbent, the oil that is injected into earth’s crust can cause it to flow into the underground aquifers that contain a carbon dioxide store of thousands of years. If the climate isn’t altered to increase CO2 levels in the soil and aquifers then the life cycles of plants and animals living in these regions will be greatly affected, sometimes even eliminating entire species.
These types of potent greenhouse gas emissions have to be taken seriously, not just because of their potential environmental impact as well as because they pose a direct threat to the future of our civilization and the way of life on Earth. Scientists agree that fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas must be limited to preserve the world for future generations. Unfortunately, efforts at mitigating climate change to ensure that future generations aren’t severely affected by climate change that is accelerating as we address the current problems of greenhouse gases and pollution emitted from the burning of fossil fuels, are hindered by the ongoing rate of production of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
