A catalytic converter is a small exhaust emission control device which converts exhaust gases and other pollutants from an internal combustion engine to less- pollutant pollutants to catalyze an oxygen reduction reaction. When an internal combustion engine burns gasoline for fuel, some gases pass through exhaust pipes and combine oxygen in the exhaust gases to create the pollution known as gaseous emission. Many gases escape the engine via the exhaust outlets. These gases are known to be particulate emissions. The catalytic convert reduces these particulates, so they don’t escape to the air.
There are many kinds of gaseous emissions that can be combusted by the catalytic converter. They include hydrocarbons as well as carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides, along with carbon monoxide, and others. The catalytic convertor actually contains two chemicals. One is a reduce catalyst and the other is a reductase. The reaction can be facilitated by a reduction catalyst which reduces the toxic metal present in the catalyst. Although palladium is a great way to remove pollutants, it is more expensive to make than platinum. If you need a catalytic converter for your car, make sure it is made of platinum. It is the only metal which completely releases its energy if it is exposed to exhaust fumes.
